Common liquid waste disposal options

This is a critical way of compacting non-hazardous liquid waste to enhance its disposal. The waste is pumped into sturdy bags where water is removed, leaving solid waste.
Typically, landfills don't accept free liquid wastes. Therefore, it's essential to remove water and take the solid non-hazardous waste to a landfill for disposal.
The most typical way of dewatering liquid waste is centrifugal dewatering. A cylindrical vessel generates a centrifugal force that flings solids from the liquid waste and makes it form a white substance.
Incineration method is the best suitable for disposing of hazardous liquid wastes such as acids and chemicals. First, the liquid is pumped into a combustion chamber where it's incinerated at a high temperature of 850ºC. It's then pumped into the second chamber where it's heated to a temperature of about 1150ºC.
The process evaporates the water into hot gases while the solid is left in the form of ash residue. The residue can be disposed of in landfills because it's no longer harmful to the environment. The hot gases are cooled and treated to remove air pollutants before being released into the atmosphere.
Sedimentation process is almost similar to dewatering. However, while dewatering uses centrifugal force to separate water from liquid waste, sedimentation uses gravity to separate the two states of matter.
The process leaves the liquid waste in a sedimentation basin. Due to the high flowing velocity of the liquid waste, the solid particles remain suspended and later settle at the bottom as sludge.
Once the liquid and solid wastes are separated, the solid sediments are disposed of in a landfill or a licensed garbage disposal site.
This involves adding binding agents to liquid waste until it forms a compact solid. Many facilities solidify liquid wastes using fly dust, lime ash, sawdust, and gypsum to add rigidity and compactness to liquid waste.
After solidification, the compacted waste can be disposed of in approved landfills. Besides, companies can ship it to waste-to-energy conversion facilities or incineration plants.
